In the Communities In Schools championship game Centennial edged St John's 55 to 54 in overtime. The four minute overtime saw some great defense with Centennial getting a two pointer and two foul shots to secure the win. The Knights were led by Tournament MVP (CIS) Devonta' White with 22 points. The Cadets' Chris Martin had 25 points.

The Rotary Championship saw West Ashley defeat Sturt 68 to 59. Sturt made a late run at the Wildcats but could not catch them. Tom Daly had 22 points for Sturt. Tournament MVP (Rotary) Matt Kennedy scored 28 points and was a perfect 10 for 10 at the free throw line.

West Ashley - Rosser Thrash Spirit Award

For third place in the CIS bracket North Charleston held on to beat Goose Creek 51 to 50. It was a very close game throughout with aggressive defense on both sides. Denzel Myers led the Cougars with 14 points; Corey Washington had 10 rebounds. The score was tied 7 times and there were 8 lead changes.

In the 2:30 PM game RJ Slawson scored 33 points, a tournament high, and had 17 rebounds, also a tournament high leading Fort Dorchester to a 73 to 63 victory over East Hall. Charles Perry had 17 points for the Vikings.

Led by Jamar Gillespie, Ridge View defeats Our Savior New American 77 to 63. The Blazers Jamar Gillespie had 18 points and 4 rebounds. Our Savior's Franklin Millian led all scores with 29 points and also led in rebounds with 9. The game was tied at 38 at the half.

The 11:30 game was down to the wire with Manning rallying in the second half to take a one point victory over James Island 53 to 52. The two teams were equally matched, Manning was 46% from the field and James Island was 50% and each had 26 rebounds. C. J. Bray of James Island tallied 19 points to lead all scorers.

The first game of the final day saw Bishop England beat John Carroll 55 to 44. Down by 2 at half time the Bishops rallied in the second half for the victory. The Bishop's Charlie Hughes led all scores with 25 points. Ronald Scott scored 21 for John Carroll.

In an exciting final game of day 2 Centennial held off an aggressive North Charleston team to win 53 to 50. Vincent Bailey had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. The Cougars' Denzel Myers scored 21 points and had 12 rebounds. Centennial led most of the game but North Charleston came on strong in the final minutes and had a chance to win. Centennial plays St. John's at 8:30 PM on Wednesday for the championship!

Sturt Sabres defeated Pinewood Prep 80 to 56 to advance to the 7 PM championship game against West Ashley. Tom Daly had 25 points and Rhys Elliott had 21 for the Sabres. Pinewood's Bruce Haynes had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sturt shot over 50% from the field.

At the 4 PM game West Ashley pulled away at the end to defeat Wando 53 to 42. It was a close game. The Wildcat's Broderick Seay had 16 points. Wando's Naji Pasha had a double double with 10 rebounds and 15 points. West Ashley plays Sturt in the Rotary championship game at 7 PM tomorrow night.

In a very close game Fort Dorchester edged James Island 57 to 52. Fort Dorchester tried to pull away but James Island kept it close. The Patriots' RJ Slawson had a double double with 15 rebounds and 13 points. Julian Johnson led all scores with 15 points. Justin Bolus had 12 for James Island. Fort Dorchester plays East Hall at 2:30 PM tomorrow.

Our Savior New American beat Bishop England 68 to 49 in the third game of the day. Sam Hattin scored 26 points and Daouda Soumaoro had 13 rebounds for the winners. BE's Walker Heffron had 23 points. Our Savior shot 60.5% from the field.

East Hall defeated Manning 72 to 60 in the 11:30 AM game. Phillip Dukes scored 25 for Manning and Charles Perry of East Hall had 17 points. Eleven of East Hall's players scored!

First game of Day 2 saw Ridge View rally to beat John Carroll 60 to 54. John Carroll opened the game to take an early lead and led by two at half time.John Carroll's Malcolm McMillan led all scores with 23 points. Jamar Gillespie had 15 points for Ridge View.

In the last game of day one Centennial defeats James Island 77 to 64. James Island was down 17 at the half but kept coming back in the second half, but were unable to catch Centennial. Devonta' White of Centennial scored 20 points and Nathan Harries added 15 points. James Island outrebounded Centennial 39 to 33. Centennial's 49.2% helped secure the victory. C. J. Bray had 14 points for James Island.

In the 7 PM game Sturt Sabres beat Bishop England 77 to 39. Tom Daly of Sturt scored 22 points in the win. Sturt shot 52.5% from the field. Alex Abrams led the Bishops with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Sturt Sabres plays Pinewood Prep tomorrow at 7 PM.

North Charleston defeated Fort Dorchester 57 to 41 in the 4 PM game. Denzel Myers had 28 points and he played an aggressive defense. James Brown had 16 points and between the two of them accounted for 44 of the Cougars 57 points.North Charleston hustled and ran the entire game. RJ Slawson had 14 for the Patriots.

In the 2:30 PM game Wando escaped Our Savior New American with a 61 to 57 victory in overtime. It was tied at 57 with less than a minute to go. Franklin Milian of Our Savior was the leading scorer with 24 points. Wando had three players each with 16 points - Naji Pasha, John Swinton, and Joe Rubino. Both teams played good defense and were aggressive on the boards.

In the third game West Ashley defeated John Carroll 70 to 39. West Ashley shot a sizzling 62.8% from the field and outrebounded undersized John Carroll 31 to 14. The Wildcat's Matt Kenndy led all scorers with 17 points. West Ashley meets Wando at 4:00 PM on Tuesday 12/29.

The 11:30 AM game was also a close one with Goose Creek holding off East Hall for a 48 to 44  victory. East Hall was down double digits most of the first half. They closed to tie the game but Goose Creek pulled ahead and held on for the win. DeVontae Wright led Goose Creek with 12 points. Goose Creek shot 50% from the field.

The first game of the Classic was a close one! Pinewood Prep edged Ridge View 55-54. Steve Chase of Pinewood led all scorers with 19 points. His teammate Bruce Haynes had 17 points. It was a close game throughout with Pinewood leading by 5 at half time. Jamar Gillespie had 13 points and 7 rebounds for Ridge View.

The brackets and the schedule of games for December 28th were announced at the press conference on December 7th at the Radisson Hotel! There were about 200 people at the press conference. Danny Kassis highlighted the six out of town teams. The coaches of the 10 local teams talked about their team and introduced members of their team who were at the press conference. The schedule for the 28th is set forth under the 'scoreboard' and the 'schedule' tab. There are some exciting first round games. Come out and see some great basketball, games start at 10 AM on December 28th!

There will again be 16 teams and 24 games. The games will be played over 3 days - Monday December 28th, Tuesday December 29th, and Wednesday December 30th with 8 games a day starting at 10 AM. The tournament will again be held at West Ashley High School.

There is an international team participating in this year's tournament-Sturt Sabres Varsity from Adelaide, South Australia. In addition to Sturt, there are two teams from  Georgia - Centennial High School from Roswell and East Hall High School from Gainesville. There is a team from Centereach, New York - Our Savior New American and two teams from the Baltimore/Washington area - The John Carroll School from Bel Air, Maryland and St John's High School from Washington, DC. The remaining 10 teams are from South Carolina.

Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company is the major tournament sponsor for the 5th year. Their support and participation has been a significant factor in the success and growth of the tournament.

The tournament proceeds will again support Communities In Schools and the Rotary Club of North Charleston. Communities In Schools is a stay-in-school, dropout prevention program. The goals of CIS are to improve students' attendance, attachment to school, academic performance, and to provide positive role models. The Rotary Club of North Charleston awards college scholarships to students in the North Charleston, SC area.
